Bio
Based in Los Angeles and New York, I am a visual artist and independent curator in photography and performance. I specialize in supporting artists as they venture into performance, often their very first time, through research, development, collaboration and production.
I currently serve as a Curator at Large for the Performa Biennial. While at my tenure at Performa, I have organized projects and commissions by Tania Bruguera, Barbara Kruger, Zanele Muholi, Jacolby Satterwhite, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Sara Cwynar, Anna Maria Häkkinen, Richard Kennedy, Tabita Rezaire, Athi-Patra Ruga, Kia LaBeija, and Shikeith. In 2023, I co-curated the Performa Finnish Pavilion with Esa Nickle and Defne Ayas to critical acclaim.
I curated Excelsior: Science-Fiction from the Asian Diaspora for ATLT and Nowness, and Time Share on social communities and performing resistance which broke streaming records online.
With generous support, my research is funded by the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York, Frame Contemporary Art Finland, Lithuanian Cultural Institute, Outset India, Royal Norwegian Consulate General, and The Josie Club. In Spring 2024, I was selected for residencies at Banff Centre, Canada, and ARCAthens, Greece.
My studio work explores gender, identity politics, psychoanalysis, and visual culture utilizing conceptual photography and art historical frameworks to challenge traditional portraiture and image constructions. Exhibitions include a museum project at California Museum of Photography, two solo shows at Jessica Silverman gallery, and a national AAPI billboard commission with For Freedoms. My work has been recently acquired by the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University.
A selection of projects are featured in The New York Times, T Magazine, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Vogue, PBS SoCal, Artforum, Bomb Magazine, Artnet, Cultured, Document Journal, Vice, SF Gate, Standard Culture, and Autre Magazine.
